Nair aboard for Thunder title defence

Teen off-spinner has his Big Bash contract upgraded after impressive series of performances in Matador Cup

An impressive Matador One-Day Cup has helped teenage off-spinner Arjun Nair snare an upgraded contract with the Sydney Thunder for the upcoming KFC Big Bash League.

The 18-year-old was one of the standouts for the winless Cricket Australia XI over the past three weeks, bagging 11 wickets at 22.7.

He has also shown he's very capable with the bat, hitting 67 at the top of the order against a Victoria attack boasting experienced bowlers Michael Beer, Jon Holland, Fawad Ahmed and Dan Christian.

Quick Single: Spinner Nair dares to be different

Nair has signed a full professional contract after being a development rookie when the club won their first BBL title last season.

“Last year it was great to be around people like Hussey, Russell, Watson and Kallis and see how they operate and go about their business,” said Nair.

“I’m really excited to be able to come back this year, hopefully I can get an opportunity and perform well.

“To play in the Big Bash is my number one goal. I want to keep improving and strive for it.”

Quick Single: Heat launch world-first VR experience

The Thunder Academy graduate has played six games for Australia Under 19s and made his Sheffield Shield debut for NSW Blues in February after taking 9-70 against ACT in the Futures League.

Thunder Director of Cricket Michael Hussey believes Nair has continued to develop his skills over the past 12 months.

“Arjun is a gifted young bowler who impressed during his time as a rookie last season,” said Hussey.

“He’s a modern-day spinner whose variations are perfectly suited to T20 cricket.

“He has already been exposed to a considerable amount of elite cricket with the NSW Blues, the National Performance Squad and the Cricket Australia XI.”

Nair will likely face his sternest test when he lines up for a Cricket Australia XI to face South Africa in this weekend's tour match in Adelaide.
