Young guns to watch in BBL|05

CA national talent manager Greg Chappell is tipping a host of young players make an impact in BBL|05

The KFC Big Bash League has built a reputation for nurturing up-and-coming home-grown heroes, with the likes of James Faulkner and Glenn Maxwell using the competition to launch themselves onto the world stage.

As we enter the BBL's fifth season, Australian Test great and current Cricket Australia national talent manager Greg Chappell has cast his eye over Australia’s next generation of cricketing talent.

BBL signings: All the BBL ins and outs so far

Here is the crop of young players Chappell is tipping to excite and set alight BBL|05:

Billy Stanlake (Adelaide Strikers)

A big recruit – literally – for the Strikers. Standing at more than 200cm tall and able to bowl more than 140kmh, this 21-year-old is an exciting young fast bowler following in the footsteps of Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Johnson and James Pattinson.

Jimmy Peirson (Brisbane Heat)

Aggressive right-hand opening bat who just happens to also be a quality wicketkeeper, Peirson represented Australia in the 2012 U19 World Cup and has gone on to make his List A debut for Queensland. He played a full season for Brisbane Heat in BBL|04.

Timm van der Gugten (Hobart Hurricanes)

A regular representative for the Netherlands national cricket team, van der Gugten is a strong fast bowler who is starting to live up to the promise he’s shown for years after recovering from some injury concerns.

Tom Beaton (Melbourne Renegades)

Hard hitting top-order batsman who has the ability to take it down town with the likes of fellow Renegades Dwayne Bravo and Chris Gayle. A 24-year-old from WA who played for Australia in the 2010 U19 World Cup with Mitch Marsh and Josh Hazlewood.

Marcus Stoinis (Melbourne Stars)

An exciting and powerful allrounder who made his Australian T20 International debut against England this year. He is a hard-hitting batsman and a lively bowler and will continue to surprise.

Joel Paris (Perth Scorchers)

Another exciting young left-arm fast bowler. He swings it at speed and is only 22 years old and while injuries have unfortunately slowed him recently, he played consistently during this season’s Matador BBQs One-Day Cup, which was pleasing.

Ryan Carters (Sydney Sixers)

After combining with Aaron Finch in a record partnership and scoring 209 against New Zealand in a recent tour match, Carters is a top-order batsman who can also keep. The wonderful philanthropic work he’s doing with Batting For Change is making a huge difference off the field, and he has the potential to do the same on field with his intelligent batting.

Jake Doran (Sydney Thunder)

Doran was born in 1996, a year after his Thunder teammates Mike Hussey and Jacques Kallis made their first-class debuts. Last season he became the youngest player to make his Big Bash debut at 18 years and 51 days, and he's is one of the most exciting batting prospects in the country. An accumulator of runs, Doran also has surprising power when called upon.
