A massive blow for the Melbourne Renegades with scans confirming Dwayne Bravo will miss the rest of the tournament

Melbourne Renegades have been dealt a massive blow with allrounder Dwayne Bravo ruled out of the remainder of the KFC Big Bash League season with a hamstring injury.

Bravo underwent scans this morning after injuring his hamstring during the Renegades’ loss to the Scorchers at Etihad Stadium on Thursday night, with the tests revealing a serious injury that will require surgery and a prolonged stint on the sidelines.

The West Indian allrounder was stationed on the boundary during the Scorchers’ innings when he made a desperate dive to cut off a shot from Michael Klinger.

The 33-year-old immediately reached for his hamstring after the incident before being treated and escorted from the ground on a Medicab.

“Unfortunately my Big Bash season is over which is very disappointing,” Bravo said on Friday.

“I’ll now have surgery and the rehabilitation to get me fit and playing at my best again. I want to thank all the Renegades fans for their support for me and I hope to see them again next season.”

The Renegades suffered a final-ball defeat on Thursday, with captain Aaron Finch bowling the final over with his options limited after Bravo was stretchered from the ground.

“It’s a huge blow, he’s one of the best allrounders in the world,” Finch said on Thursday.

“It’s an unbelievably damaging blow for us, but also for him because we know how much he loves coming out here.”

Renegades spinner Brad Hogg said it was now up to the remainder of the squad to step up to cover the allrounder’s loss.

"I drove him home last night and he was more gutted about the loss," Hogg said.

"You never want to see players like that go down. If you see the footage, his ankle went below him and the surface was a bit uneven.

"At the end of the day, you do lose players throughout the tournament. We've lost James Pattinson for the first couple of games and that's a big loss.

"And that's where the other guys have got to step up and play their roles. If you're going to win the Big Bash, you're going to require all 18 of the squad."

Bravo was in his fourth season at the Renegades after a stint with the Sydney Sixers and with the Renegades chasing just their second finals appearance since the inception of the BBL, Bravo’s injury will hamper the progress of one of the pre-tournament title fancies.

Bravo is also the man behind the catchy Zooper Dooper 'Champion' advertising campaign, which saw him rework the song he and his West Indian teammates made famous in the World T20 earlier this year in India.

The Renegades are currently considering their replacement player options.
