Wright says farewell to the Stars

Englishman says goodbye to BBL club after seven seasons; is ruled out of Thunder clash due to concussion

Melbourne Stars overseas recruit Luke Wright has called time on his KFC Big Bash League career with the marquee club.

Having been ruled out of Saturday's clash with Sydney Thunder at the MCG due to a delayed concussion he sustained following Tuesday’s loss to Sydney Sixers, Wright announced his playing days with the Stars have come to an end.

"It’s been seven years with the Melbourne Stars, and it’s been a time that I’ve absolutely loved and will cherish," the Englishman said.

2016: Luke Wright's match-winning knock

"I’m enormously proud to have been a foundation member and I’m so grateful to have been given the opportunity to play for such a long time and amongst so many great players and teammates.

"I've forged so many good friendships on and off the field and it’s been incredible to be part of such a tremendous club. I’ve loved running out onto the MCG in front of a terrific bunch of fans who’ve been so supportive.

"Obviously, it’s not the farewell I’d imagined, but that’s cricket. I leave with nothing but great memories of my time here and I wish the boys, and the club generally, all the best in the years to come. This chapter of my career is closed but I look forward to the next phase, and catching up with many of these guys down the track."

Wright leaves the Stars as its most capped player with 57 games having started as a foundation member in BBL|01 in 2011-12.

2016: Wright brings up his century in style

The 32-year-old is also the club’s leading run-scorer with 1,480 runs at 29.02 and is one of just three players to post two centuries in the BBL, alongside Usman Khawaja and Craig Simmons.

Wright's 117no against Hobart Hurricanes in 2012 was the competition's highest score for six years before Hobart's D'Arcy Short set a new mark with 122no against Brisbane this month.

In five games this season, Wright posted five scores between 11 and 21 without kicking on.

The Stars sit bottom of the table and will miss the finals for the first time in the tournament’s history.
