Gades alive after remarkable win

Melbourne Renegades keep their finals hopes alive after an unbelievable final over

The scorecard: Melbourne Renegades 5-199 (Finch 71, Harris 48) beat Brisbane Heat 198 (McCullum 64, Hogg 1-18) by one run

The match in a tweet: Unbelievable! Renegades stay alive after a remarkable final over at the Gabba!

The final over: The Heat needed 18 off the final over, but the equation rapidly became five off four when Nathan Rimmington bowled a wide before Joe Burns sent his next two balls flying into the stands. Burns holed out next ball, but it was four off three required when Rimmington bowled another wide. A run out followed next ball, before another Rimmington wide left the Heat needing three off two with just one wicket in hand. A dot ball followed and just when you thought the finish couldn't get any better, Rimmington's final ball produced yet another wide, but it mattered not as Mitch Swepson took off for a panicked single, only to be run out. Renegades prevail despite Rimmington's final-ball wide

Fierce Finch: Needing a victory at the Gabba to stay in finals contention, Renegades skipper Aaron Finch began with clear intent after losing the toss. He combined with Marcus Harris in a damaging first-wicket stand of 106 off just 55 balls, punishing some loose bowling from Brisbane's pace attack. It was the sixth-highest partnership in Renegades franchise history, while their tally of 75 from the six-over powerplay was the second best of the tournament. The openers smacked six boundaries apiece, with Finch clearing the fence four times on his way to a 35-ball 71.

Hasty Harris: Opener Harris was no slouch either in his blazing partnership with Finch, striking 48 off 32 balls against the Brisbane Heat, including six boundaries and one six.

Brutal Baz: Brisbane skipper Brendon McCullum returned after missing Brisbane’s last match through suspension and it’s safe to say the former NZ captain was champing at the bit to send the ball flying into the Gabba stands. It took just three balls for McCullum to get his eye in, blasting a Tom Cooper delivery over the boundary and he carried on in the same vein, equalling the record for second-fastest BBL half-century – off just 18 balls – before the Brisbane humidity took its toll. McCullum lost his dinner on the Gabba in-field and despite taking some time to try and collect himself, he departed soon after for 64 off 40 deliveries.

The spell: George Bradley Hogg, never retire. The evergreen spinner produced an outstanding spell to frustrate the Heat batsmen. As Tom Cooper, James Pattinson and Nathan Rimmington bore the brunt of the Heat’s fury, Hogg’s four overs went for just 18 runs, with 11 dot balls. He picked up the wicket of Alex Ross for his efforts and boy, did he love it!

The shot of the tournament: Finch’s monster six over extra-cover off the final ball of the first over was so good, it prompted former Australia captain Ricky Ponting to declare, “This is the shot of the tournament!”

The short-lived stat: Finch’s fifty off just 20 balls was the equal-fifth fastest in BBL history and the quickest of BBL|06. That is, until McCullum blasted a half-century of his own off just 18 balls – the equal-second quickest ever.

The wash-up: The Renegades climbed into the top four, but they'll only stay there if the Sixers lose tomorrow, or if the Hurricanes win by a big enough margin to overtake them on net run rate. The Heat remain on top but could miss out on a home final if the Scorchers topple the Hurricanes, but they should be safe if the Sixers beat the Stars, given the Sixers' poor NRR.
