The finals outcome: Perth Scorchers needed a big win over the Hurricanes to leapfrog the Heat into first (with Stars v Sixers still to come), and that's exactly what they got. The BBL's most successful club hit form at the right time, hammering Hobart and marching into the finals with a serious warning to the rest of the competition. When Hobart could only manage 6-134, the job had to be done inside 15.4 overs. The suddenly red-hot Scorchers managed that with 11 balls still up their sleeve.

Umpires' Verdict: Hurricanes v Scorchers

The hero: Shaun Marsh is BACK. While a T20 in Hobart is a world away from the pressures and pitfalls of Test cricket in India, the way the classy left-hander batted would surely have delighted Daren Lehmann, Steve Smith and co. Marsh was imperious in making a match-winning 57, taking to the spinners (one six from Clive Rose went 104m) and the quicks alike, with some superb driving, cutting and pulling. The 33-year-old has been out of sorts but quickly found his timing, and looks a serious threat to whoever the Scorchers meet in their semi-final.

The spell: Mitchell Johnson utilised his two old mate – pace and hostility – to put a dent in the Hurricanes innings before it had gathered any real momentum. With a couple of quick, well-directed short balls, Johnson accounted for danger pair Tim Paine and Ben McDermott inside the Powerplay and the Scorchers never looked back. He finished with 2-15 from four overs to set up the contest for the visitors.

The consolation knock: It's been a breakthrough season for D'Arcy Short so it was only fitting that he gave us another reminder of his hitting ability with a team-best 36 from 24 deliveries.

The talking point: Out or not out? Ashton Turner did exceptionally well to take this inside the boundary and flick a throw to teammate Tim Bresnan … but did his foot touch the rope? All of Hobart thought so, but the third umpire didn't, and George Bailey was sent on his way in what was a huge wicket in the context of both the contest and the Hurricanes' season.

The catch II: Clive Rose had already hammered 29 not out from 18 balls but the bespectacled left-arm spinner backed up his batting with a solid spell that included this classic return catch.

The wash-up: Season over for the Hurricanes, who let another year go by without qualifying for the finals. Perth meanwhile, have flexed their muscles and will be difficult to beat at the Furnace in their home semi-final.
