The match in a tweet: Scorchers win by one run! Carberry (62) returns to help post 5-173, Hogg/Agar spin a web before Willey/Tye (JUST) close it out #BBL05

The moment: Tim Paine (57) and Dan Christian (26) had put on 53 for the third wicket and were beginning to put the Hurricanes in a strong position for the run hosts. With the first ball of his second over, Bradley Hogg spun one past Christian and collected the big-hitter's off stump. An over later, Ashton Agar did the same to Paine, beating the Hobart skipper with an arm ball. With the exit of the key pair, the 'Canes has lost 2-8 in 10 balls and from there it was going to take something special to get the win.

The hero: With Shaun Marsh on national duties, Michael Carberry returned to the side and was immediately in sparkling touch. The Englishman accelerated his side's scoring in the middle overs, taking Dan Christian for 14 before following up with 17 off the leg-spin of Cameron Boyce. "The last week or so I've been feeling in good touch," Carberry told Network 10 after smashing 62 from 35, admitting he "wasn't at my best when I first came over (from England)".

The support cast: David Willey came in late in the piece for what was a decisive cameo - he blasted 25no from nine balls in concert with Cam Bancroft (26no off 22) to take their side to a strong total. Agar took two wickets after opening the bowling, while the ever-reliable Michael Klinger made 36 at the top of the order. And what about Andrew Tye? The paceman executed his skills (almost) every time under intense pressure at the death, hitting the block-hole with precision.

The consolation effort: Shaun Tait has been typically hot and cold through BBL|05 but he was lethal today. 'The Wild Thing' clocked 150.5kph and was at his fiery best, taking 2-29 to take his season tally to nine wickets. Paine was excellent in making his second half-century of the tournament.

The stat: Seven matches, seven innings, 101 runs at 14 for Kumar Sangakkara in BBL|05. The legendary Sri Lankan was signed amid much fanfare but for probably the first time in his career, he hasn't lived up to the hype.

The wash-up: The Hurricanes must win their next match and hope other results go their way in order to make the finals. For the Scorchers, despite some nervy moments today, it's business as usual - they're through to a fifth-consecutive finals series.

The next stop: It doesn't get any easier for the Hurricanes; they travel to Adelaide for their final match against the Strikers. The Scorchers meanwhile, end a busy spell with five days off, next hosting Melbourne Stars at The Furnace.
