Match Recap: Renegades defeat Sixers

Melbourne Renegades registered a memorable victory over the top-placed Sydney Sixers at North Sydney Oval

Match in a tweet: 'Gades pull off the highest run-chase in WBBL|02 thanks to late cameos from Maitland Brown and Kris Britt

The score: Sydney Sixers 5-148 (Gardner 56) in 20 overs lost to Melbourne Renegades 4-150 (Britt 44) in 18.4 overs by six wickets

The hero: It might have been the lower order that got the Renegades home at the end but it was Rachael Priest's early onslaught that set up the chase. The Renegades opener was inspirational as she used her brute power to clear the pickets at North Sydney Oval on three occasions. Priest’s innings of 44 from 40 balls gave her team the belief and the confidence to knock off the top-placed Sixers.

The support cast: Cameos from Kris Britt (31 from 21) and Maitlan Brown (30 from 15) at the end buried the Sixers. Britt laid the foundation holding up one end while Brown demolished the Sixers attack by smashing 30 from 15 balls. Between them the pair struck three sixes and five fours in an unbeaten match-winning partnership of 37 from 21 balls.

The consolation act: Ashleigh Gardner once again showed why she is the future of Australian cricket with yet another blistering innings. Despite the Sixers losing Ellyse Perry and Alyssa Healy early in the innings, Gardner’s onslaught against the Renegades bowlers was a treat to watch. Gardner struck an incredible five sixes, including one which went out of the ground. Gardner’s innings of 56 from 37 balls was her fourth fifty of the season. The allrounder also managed to claim two wickets in her four-over spell but unfortunately for the Sixers she just didn’t have enough support on the day.

The Shot: There have been some big blows in the WBBL|02 but this one from Gardner has to be one of the cleanest and the longest of the tournament. The Sixers No.3 charged down the ground to send the ball over the grandstand and out of the ground.

The injury: The Sixers face an anxious wait over the fitness of their skipper Ellyse Perry, who injured her hamstring while trying to stretch back in the crease and did not take the field when the Sixers bowled. To add salt to Perry’s wound, she was unable to stop herself being stumped by Priest for seven.

The next stop: Both teams will go head to head again tomorrow at North Sydney Oval.
