Lumb, Henriques guide Sixers home

Sixers duo post fifties after Renegades trio Gayle, Bravo and Beaton set target of 173

The match in a tweet: Sixers go top! Henriques and Lumb star before a late Renegades fightback while an elephant(!) has us in stitches #BBL05

The hero(es): Hard to split Michael Lumb and Moises Henriques so we'll put them both in the hero category. The left-right hand combination put on 101 for the third wicket with both posting half-centuries in a record-breaking run chase. Lumb was the more aggressive of the pair with five sixes in a 35-ball 63, while Henriques started slowly but took over when Lumb departed, hitting four fours and two sixes to finish with 62 from 38 balls.

The turning point: The 23 runs the Sixers scored off the 13th over were crucial, but the men in magenta had all the momentum at that point thanks to Michael Lumb's counter-attack in Xavier Doherty's third over. The Sixers needed more than 10 an over to win at that stage, but the left-hander slammed three sixes in four balls to reduce the required rate to nine and the visitors were on their way.

The collapse: Cruising at 3-153 in the 16th over and needing just 20 runs to win, the Sixers created some nervous moments for themselves by losing four wickets for just 11 runs to leave the task of finishing the job up to the tail. But the unheralded Trent Lawford smacked Dwayne Bravo straight to the long on boundary to secure the win with three wickets and seven balls to spare.

The comedy value: It's difficult to describe this bit of commentary from the Channel 10 boys. Let's just say it involves an elephant, Mark Waugh and it will have you in stitches.

The surprise: Tom Beaton has been in and out of Western Australia's senior side for some time, so it was slightly surprising that he was named in the Renegades batting order ahead of experienced T20 player Tom Cooper. But with his side in trouble at 4-94, Beaton combined with Dwayne Bravo for a superb counter-attacking partnership that gave the Renegades a chance.

The stat: Having broken a franchise record for their highest-ever score in their last match on Sunday, Sydney's chase tonight was their highest in franchise history.

The upper-decker: It's hardly a surprise that West Indian duo Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo cleared the pickets five times between them on Wednesday night, but none of them were bigger than Gayle's second hit in the video below. It's MASSIVE

The relief: Michael Lumb is a veteran of the BBL, but unfortunately one of the most replayed moments of his career has been the catch he somehow put down in the season opener last Thursday. So when the Englishman finally held on to a simple one tonight, needless to say he pretty pleased with himself.

The missing spinner: Steve O'Keefe impressed with 2-17 in the win over Hobart on Sunday, so why didn't he get a bowl in Melbourne on Wednesday night? Sixers captain Moises Henriques explains: "With Chris Gayle and the boundaries here quite short square, we wanted as many balls as possible to go through a thigh length and no fuller. Henriques told Channel 10. "And unfortunately SOK just doesn't get the bounce. I just thought if the quicks could execute - and we played five quicks - bowling that tough length, they would have been harder to score off." And as the captain of a side that is now top of the table, who could argue?

The collision: There was a heated moment during the Renegades innings when Beaton and Trent Lawford collided in the mad scramble for a quick single. Beaton wasn't best pleased, but he responded in the best possible way.

The shot: Nic Maddinson had the Channel 10 commentators in awe with this stand-and-deliver effort early on the Sixers' run chase. The left-hander showed all of his trademark power with a towering six down the ground off the bowling of Chris Tremain.
