Lyon, Haddin help Sixers crush Hobart

The hero: Brad Haddin may have retired from international cricket, but he could still be plying his trade in the T20 game for several years to come based on Sunday's form. The veteran blasted two sixes and eight fours in a 45-ball innings of 72, taking a particular liking to the medium-pace of West Indian Darren Sammy. Despite years of crouching behind the stumps, Haddin is still super fit and stints in the Pakistan Super League and Indian Premier League could be on the cards next year if he continues this form.

The moment: Chasing a target of 187 was always going to be tricky, but the Hurricanes were given next to no chance when they lost two wickets in the opening over. Nathan Lyon bowled magnificently having been handed the new ball, forcing Tim Paine into a loose shot fourth ball and then beating the great Kumar Sangakkara in flight to grab the key wicket with the very next ball. The wickets continued to tumble, but Lyon's first over all but ended the game then and there. Australia's Test spinner finished with figures of 5-23 from 3.5 overs, the second-best in BBL history, adding weight to his push for selection in the World T20 next year.

The support cast: Apart from Haddin and Lyon, the star for the Sixers was Jordan Silk. One of the revelations of BBL|04, Silk finished off Haddin's fast start by blasting two sixes in his innings of 41 from just 25 balls. The fifth-ranked batsmen in the BBL, Silk continues to get the job done with a minimum of fuss.

The shot: Batsmen need all the help they can get to counter the express pace of Shaun Tait, so using the back of the bat is probably an ill-advised tactic. It was unorthodox, Sean Abbott, but it kinda worked!

The consolation efforts: In a nightmare outing for the Hurricanes, the performance of leg-spinner Cameron Boyce and Australia batsman George Bailey were shining lights. Bailey played the ultimate lone hand in Hobart's horror run chase, finishing unbeaten on 62 in a total of just 91, the highest percentage of a team's completed total in BBL history (68 per cent). Australia's incumbent T20 spinner, Boyce struck with his very first ball and also picked up the key wicket of Brad Haddin to finish with 2-25 from four overs, stating his case for selection in the World T20 next year.

The nightmare: Any fans who turned out to the SCG just to see Kumar Sangakkara were left bitterly disappointed, with the Sri Lankan legend perishing first ball. The biggest recruit of the off-season looked like a key man in a tough run chase, but was undone by some clever bowling from Nathan Lyon as the spinner picked up two crucial wickets in the opening over.

The 'what the?' moment: There aren't many words we can use to describe the chaos that was the final delivery of the Sixers' innings. Just watch.

The stat: An incredible match produced some incredible numbers; Nathan Lyon finished with the second-best BBL figures ever, George Bailey's 62 in a total of 91 is the highest percentage of a team total ever (68 per cent), the home side's total of 7-186 is their highest ever, Hobart's total of 91 is their lowest ever and the victory margin of 95 runs is the third-largest in BBL history.

The wash-up: Thankfully for the Hurricanes, they only have to wait two days before they can attempt to wipe this nightmare performance from their memory banks. They are sure to be better when they take on the Heat in Hobart on Tuesday night, while the Sixers will take on the Renegades in Melbourne a day later.
