Test stars in, Behrendorff out for Scorchers

Defending champions name strong squad for opening match against Adelaide Strikers, but star quick misses

The Perth Scorchers have named a strong squad for their BBL|05 opener on Monday, but key bowler Jason Behrendorff will sit out as he continues his recovery from a back injury.

Australia Test squad members Adam Voges, Shaun Marsh, Mitch Marsh and Nathan Coulter-Nile have all been named for the clash against the Adelaide Strikers at the WACA Ground, while veterans Michael Klinger and Brad Hogg have also been included in the 13-man squad.

While Australia's Test fast-bowlers Josh Hazlewood, Peter Siddle and James Pattinson have been rested from the opening round of the BBL, Mitchell Marsh will be available as an allrounder for the Scorchers on Monday. The paceman bowled just 10 overs in Australia's first Test win against the West Indies last week.

Behrendorff, who claimed 15 wickets at an average of 16.73 in the BBL last season, will remain on the sidelines as he continues to be monitored by Scorchers medical staff.

The left-armer missed the end of last summer with a stress fracture in his back and a re-occurrence of that problem following two Sheffield Shield games this season has seen the 25-year-old put on ice again.

A Perth Scorchers spokesman said Behrendorff's omission was also due to the Scorchers having so many Test stars available, adding he expected the 25-year-old to be available for the Scorchers' second game of BBL|05 on Boxing Day against Brisbane Heat.

"The availability of players for Game 1 meant Jason was able to focus on his continued recovery from back soreness and increase in workloads and at this time we expect him to be available for selection for Game 2," the Scorchers spokesperson said.

It is expected that Test hopeful Cameron Bancroft will keep for the reigning Big Bash League champions, with regular keeper Sam Whiteman sidelined until the New Year due to a fractured finger.

Meanwhile, the Strikers have made one change to the squad that defeated the Melbourne Stars on Friday, with Jono Dean coming in for pace bowler Greg West.
