Ferguson heads north to Thunder for BBL

Domestic veteran swaps Renegades for Thunder for next three seasons

The Sydney Thunder have bolstered their batting line-up after signing dependable domestic veteran Callum Ferguson on a three-year contract.

Ferguson joins the club after spending three seasons with the Melbourne Renegades, having also played for the Adelaide Strikers.

“I’ve known Huss for a long time, we got on really well when we played together,” said Callum Ferguson.

“I’ve played with Shane Watson, Ben Rohrer and Aiden Blizzard. There’s a few guys who I’ve had a really good time playing with or against in the past and I’ve had really good dealings with all of them.

“There’s a lot of things that attracted me to Sydney Thunder, Sydney’s a great city and I’m looking forward to the experience of being a senior player in a young and talented group.”

Ferguson slams two monster sixes

Ferguson worked with Sydney Thunder Head Coach Paddy Upton while the pair were at the Pune Warriors in Indian Premier League.

“He really makes sure that everyone feels comfortable in the environment,” said Ferguson.

“He’s a very calming influence and makes sure the players have everything they need, which is what I’ve heard coming out of the Thunder and also my experience with him in the Pune Warriors in the IPL.

“He’s someone that has a lot of experience in world cricket, especially in the T20 format. He brings a lot to the team and I’m really excited about joining up with him.”

The 32-year old batsman has played 30 ODI’s, three IT20’s and a Test match for Australia and has been in fine form this season making scores of 169 in the One Day Cup and an unbeaten 182 in the Sheffield Shield for South Australia.

Ferguson matches Laughlin with freak grab

“After my last knee injury, it still feels like I’m on the comeback trail, despite being back playing for a while,” said Ferguson.

“I’m enjoying being back out playing and I’m really excited about the opportunity to join a new club, I love T20 cricket and I can’t wait for the season.”

Sydney Thunder Director of Cricket Michael Hussey believes Ferguson is a player of exception quality.

“Callum is one of the most talented batsman in Australia,” said Sydney Thunder Director of Cricket Michael Hussey.

“He’s been one of our main targets throughout the off-season and we know that there was a lot of competition for his signature.

“Callum brings a lot of experience and has played at the very highest level, we’re all very excited to welcome him to the club.”

Sydney Thunder open their KFC Big Bash League campaign against the Sydney Sixers at Spotless Stadium on 19 December.
