Seven-ball over that never was in BBL epic

Missed wide adds to the high drama at Spotless Stadium as Thunder, Stars play out a classic

A humble missed wide was the cause of widespread confusion during the Sydney Thunder's epic last-ball victory over Melbourne Stars on Wednesday night.

In the 11th over of the Thunder's innings, leg-spinner Adam Zampa sent a ball down the leg-side of left-hander Ben Rohrer, with wicketkeeper Sam Harper taking the ball neatly and appealing boisterously.

A 'not out' from the umpire followed, while Network TEN commentator Ricky Ponting said the ball must have "flicked the pad, since it hasn't been called a wide".

Ponting – and everyone else bar the official scorers – missed what was a late call of 'wide' from standing umpire Simon Fry, who received the white light on the scoreboard, indicating the call had been acknowledged in the scorebook.

As such, the umpires – and the scorers – carried on with business as usual.

Network TEN's scorer Lawrie Colliver missed the call, as did various other unofficial scorers at the venue.

“There was an appeal for a catch down the leg-side,” Fry told Optus Sport’s The Umpire’s Verdict.

“Obviously I didn’t give it out and it was a wide ball.

Marvellous Morgan's Big Bash miracle

“We always signal to the scorers and the scorers indicate once they’ve seen our single and we got that (signal) back.

“I’m not sure where all the talk is about it being a seven-ball over to be perfectly honest.

“Seven balls were bowled, six of them were legitimate.”
