BBL08: The run home for each club

Six teams remain in contention for four finals spot as the Test stars flood back in. Here's how they shape up as the season gets serious

1st: Hobart Hurricanes (18 points)

Played 12 | Won 9 | Lost 3 | NRR 0.661

The run home

Feb 7: v Renegades (home – Hobart)

Feb 9: v Thunder (away – Canberra)

A win clear on top of the table with a game in hand on their rivals and the best Net Run Rate in the competition, it will take a monumental collapse in the run home for the Hurricanes to miss out on hosting a final. They’ll secure top with a win over the Renegades at home on Thursday and will get another chance to lock in a top-two finish against the Thunder on Saturday night.

Dominant Canes cruise to another win

2nd: Sydney Sixers (16 points)

Played 13 | Won 8 | Lost 5 | NRR 0.443

The run home

Feb 10: v Stars (away – MCG)

The surprise packet of the season for some, the Sixers have already secured finals and will be all but locked in for a knockout game at the SCG if the Renegades lose to the Hurricanes on Thursday night. Even if the Renegades beat the Canes, the Sixers should be able to lock-in a home final if they beat the Stars at the MCG on Sunday. They have the added bonus of welcoming back Nathan Lyon for the remainder of the season.

Sixers book finals berth with derby win

3rd: Melbourne Renegades (16 points)

Played 13 | Won 8 | Lost 5 | NRR 0.243

The run home

Feb 7: v Hurricanes (away – Hobart)

With a top-four spot locked in, the Renegades could secure hosting rights for their first final if they’re able to topple the ladder-leading Hurricanes in Hobart on Thursday and the Sixers go down to the Stars on Sunday afternoon. Marcus Harris returns to the line-up from the Test team.

Finals-bound Renegades roll Thunder

4th: Melbourne Stars (12 points)

Played 12 | Won 6 | Lost 6 | NRR -0.144

The run home

Feb 8: v Heat (away – Brisbane)

Feb 10: v Sixers (home – MCG)

An upset loss to a Perth side with little to play for on Sunday night has dragged the Stars back into a tight race with two other teams to make the top four. Glenn Maxwell’s side can end the speculation as early as Friday if they beat the Heat in Brisbane to secure a finals spot, but a loss at the Gabba against a Heat side desperate to give Brendon McCullum a fitting farewell will leave them needing to beat the Sixers in their final game to secure fourth. A home final is still possible, but they would need to record huge victory margins in both of their remaining games to have any chance of that.

Scorchers send Klinger out a winner

5th: Sydney Thunder (11 points)

Played 13 | Won 5 | Lost 7 | No result 1 | NRR 0.029

The run home

Feb 9: v Hurricanes (home – Canberra)

The Thunder welcome back Test stars Usman Khawaja and Pat Cummins, and the side will be desperately hoping it's not too little too late. Their derby defeat to the Sixers on Saturday was a massive blow for the Thunder, but Perth’s win over the Stars means they’re not done with just yet. The equation for the Thunder is simple; they must win against the Hurricanes in Canberra, keep their Net Run Rate above that of the Heat and hope the Stars lose both their final two matches of the regular season.

Ferguson smashes sensational century

6th: Brisbane Heat (11 points)

Played 13 | Won 5 | Lost 7 | No result 1 | NRR -0.1

The run home

Feb 8: v Stars (home – Brisbane)

They couldn’t, could they? With their season all but gone just a few days ago, the Heat are suddenly just one point off fourth and could move into a finals spot with victory over the Stars in Brendon McCullum’s farewell game on Friday. Even if they win at the Gabba, the Heat will need the Stars to lose their final match to the Sixers and hope the Thunder fall to the Hurricanes on Saturday night – they will need a Net Run Rate boost if the Thunder beat the Canes – to complete a remarkable run into the knockout stage.

Heat cruise past Strikers in Adelaide

7th: Adelaide Strikers (10 points)

Played 13 | Won 5 | Lost 8 | NRR -0.531

The run home

Feb 9: v Scorchers (home – Adelaide)

Their loss to the Heat on Sunday night means the Strikers’ title defence is over and they might even end up with the wooden spoon if they lose their final match against the Scorchers on Saturday. Travis Head's return to captain the side will give the Adelaide fans something to cheer, although Colin Ingram has gone home to his family with nothing left to play for.

Strikers stun Hurricanes in Launceston

8th: Perth Scorchers (8 points)

Played 13 | Won 4 | Lost 9 | NRR -0.515

The run home

Feb 9: v Strikers (away – Alice Springs)

A morale-boosting win over the high-flying Stars on Sunday gave a hint of what could have been for the BBL’s perennial success story, who could avoid the wooden spoon if they beat the Strikers on Saturday.
