Tasmania axe Dunk, Boyce for 2018-19

Former Australia representatives let go as Tigers back youth for next summer's action

Last summer's JLT Sheffield Shield finalists Tasmania have axed former Australia representatives Cameron Boyce and Ben Dunk for the 2018-19 season.

The Tigers have also confirmed the recruitment of former Australia ODI quick Gurinder Sandhu from NSW, replacing paceman Andrew Fekete, who has returned home to Melbourne for personal reasons.

Along with the aforementioned trio, Jake Hancock, Corey Murfet, Andrew Perrin and Cameron Stevenson have not been re-contracted from last season.

It represents a significant fall for Dunk, who was the leading Shield run-scorer three seasons ago. But having played just five Shield games in 2016-17, he didn't play first-class cricket last summer and misfired in the JLT One-Day Cup as well.

Boyce, Australia's former T20 spinner, has played just six first-class games and seven one-dayers for the Tigers since shifting from Queensland in 2016.

Australia's Test and ODI captain Tim Paine is the only Cricket Australia centrally contracted player on the Tigers list, while Jackson Bird and Matthew Wade have been contracted by the Tigers after losing their CA contracts.

Sandhu is one of five new faces, alongside allrounder Jarrod Freeman, fast bowler Lawrence Neil-Smith, left-handed batsman Jack White and returning allrounder Hamish Kingston.

Fast bowler Riley Meredith and left-hander Caleb Jewell have been upgraded to full contracts after they were rookie listed last season.

After a horror run that led to the recruitment of new coach Adam Griffith last year, the young Tigers side reached the Shield final last summer, losing the decider to Queensland.

Youngsters like Jake Doran, Beau Webster, Gabe Bell and Tom Rogers all enjoyed breakout Shield seasons alongside veterans Bird, Wade and George Bailey, giving hope of a bright future in the Apple Isle.

"I can honestly see a really great horizon coming," Bailey told cricket.com.au earlier this year.

"I don't think I'll be there for the greatest years of Tassie's renaissance, but I want to be there for long enough to make an impact."

Tasmania have also revealed the Roar squad for the upcoming season, with Emily Divin, Isobel Joyce and Laura Wright all losing their contracts.

The Roar have added wicketkeeper-batter Emma Manix-Geeves, allrounder Sasha Moloney and Ashley Day from NSW.
