England recall Vince for fourth Test

Batsman comes in as cover for injured gloveman Jonny Bairstow

England have called in Hampshire's James Vince as cover for injured wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow for the fourth Test in Southampton next week.

Vince had a lean run last summer in both the Ashes in Australia and then across the Tasman in New Zealand, but this season the stylish right-hander has amassed 847 runs at 56.46 in the County Championship, including scores of 74 and 147 this week against Nottinghamshire.

Vince is set to play should gloveman Bairstow be ruled out with a fractured finger he sustained on day three of the third Test at Trent Bridge.

Bairstow was struck on the tip of his finger from a James Anderson delivery that swerved late through the air after pitching.

He left the field immediately and did not return. Fortunately for the hosts, in their XI is the country's limited-overs wicketkeeper Jos Buttler, who is expected to take the gloves should Bairstow he ruled out.

Starc's 'ball of the summer' skittles helpless Vince

Retained in the squad is Moeen Ali, the allrounder who, like Vince, had a forgettable Ashes series but has bounced back to form with 219 and match-figures of 8-89 against Yorkshire in the County Championship this week.

The only other change to the 14-man squad is the omission of Jamie Porter, who will play for Essex in the forthcoming County fixtures.

"The selection panel felt this was the right time to reintroduce James Vince to the Test squad," England national selector Ed Smith said.

"James will provide cover in case Jonny Bairstow's fractured finger prevents him playing in the fourth Test match.

"James returns to the England set-up in confident form and scoring runs.

"Jamie Porter has been part of the last three Test squads. But the selection panel did not want him to miss the opportunity of playing for Essex in the next round of championship matches.

"He will return to the squad in the event of an injury to a seam bowler."

England can win the series with a win in Southampton, but will be wary of an Indian side that put together a complete performance at Trent Bridge to take the series ledger to 2-1 with two Tests to play.
