Short sizzles as 'Canes win thriller

D'Arcy Short smashed the biggest score in Big Bash history as the Hurricanes won a final-ball thriller against the Heat at the Gabba

The score: Hobart Hurricanes 4-179 (Short 122no, McDermott 19; Cutting 2-27) defeated Brisbane Heat 8-176 (Heazlett 45, McCullum 33; Boyce 2-23) by three runs

The match in a tweet:  Short sizzles to cook Heat! Hurricanes hold on to claim win after D'Arcy Short smashed a new BBL high score and a highly controversial obstruction dismissal.

The silly point: There were many great moments in this match but it is the controversial dismissal of Alex Ross, given out obstructing the field, that has left everyone talking. It was the first time a batsman has been given out for obstructing the field in Big Bash history - and the stats nuffies think the first time in any top-flight domestic cricket in Australia. The arguments continue to rage for and against the call after it was deemed Ross deviated off his path and obstructed the fielding side in the process. What do you think?

The heroes: There was only one hero at the Gabba tonight and that was D'Arcy Short. The Hurricanes opener smashed eight sixes on his way to the highest score in Big Bash history (122no), eclipsing Luke Wright's 117 against the Hurricanes in BBL|01. To top it off, Short returned with the ball to bowl four economical overs of spin bowling to finish with figures of 1-20.

The support cast: Bowlers don't usually get much love in Twenty20 cricket, so it’s only fair we give an up-and-coming international star and an impressive leg-spinner a bit of a plug. Jofra Archer (1-39) continued his excellent tournament with three economical overs and a ridiculously nonchalant catch off his own bowling, while Cameron Boyce (2-23) showed his class with a superb spell of spin bowling. It was Dan Christian (1-8) who finished the job as the Heat needed 13 from the final six deliveries and a boundary from the last ball.

The consolation effort: Sam Heazlett's game is perfectly suited to the Gabba and the Heat opener was showing his prowess with some excellent straight hitting early in the hosts’ reply. The tall youngster hit four boundaries and two massive sixes on his way to a handy 45 from 33 deliveries.

The turning point: The Heat appeared to be cruising at 0-62 after six, but the loss of Brendon McCullum proved costly. The Heat skipper skied one off Cameron Boyce and the safe hands of George Bailey did the rest.

The stat: D'Arcy Short is just the second batter in Big Bash history to score more than 400 runs in a single BBL tournament. Shaun Marsh was the other player to do so way back in BBL|02 and Short needs just seven more runs to surpass his haul of 412 runs.

The shot: D'Arcy Short made it to 90 pretty easily, but he slowed down somewhat as he neared triple figures. After being dismissed twice in the 90s earlier in the tournament it was a case of third time lucky for the Hurricanes opener as he reached his hundred in style by smashing Brendan Doggett over the mid-on fence and into the crowd.

The Fantasy wrap: If you had D'Arcy Short as your captain this round then it's time to celebrate a victory. Short ($122,600) amassed a whopping 210 points, with Jofra Archer ($98,700) 66 points and Brendon McCullum ($73,400) 65 points the next best.

The next stops: As fate would have it, the BBL|07 schedule sees the Heat and Hurricanes battle it out again on Monday night in what will be the next contest for both sides. This match will take place in Hobart at Blundstone Arena and there will be plenty to play for following the controversial finish.
