Scorchers thrashed as 'Cane train rolls on

Meredith shines with lightning spell as Short surges to top of BBL|08 run scorers list

The scorecard: Perth Scorchers 8-107 (Agar 32; Meredith 3-15, Short 2-17) lost to Hobart Hurricanes 4-110 (Doolan 41no, Short 34; Agar 2-19) by six wickets with 15 balls remaining

The match in a tweet: Cane Train flying! Meredith and Short the stars as Hobart trounce Perth in Launceston #BBL08

The hero: Riley Meredith produced a scintillating spell of fast bowlers to claim 3-15 from four overs, including the key wickets of Ashton Turner (4) and comeback kid Cameron Bancroft (2) as he hit speeds approaching 150kph. 'Canes veteran George Bailey laughed during commentary that he had been warned against 'over-hyping' the 22-year-old speedster, and after tonight's display, there will be plenty more jumping aboard the Riley Meredith fan club.

Meredith a Fantasy star with three wickets

The moment: From the first ball of the match, James Faulkner swung a full one back into the right-handed Will Bosisto, trapping him plumb in front. For the unbeaten Hobart, the tone was set, and they barely let up from there. After four overs, the Scorchers were 4-19 and in a world of trouble.

Scorchers fall apart in Bancroft's return

The talking point: All eyes were on Bancroft, who played his first top-level match since receiving a nine-month ban for his role in the Cape Town cheating scandal. Within three balls, he was out for two, caught behind from the bowling of Meredith. Bancroft also kept wicket, taking a skied catch to dismiss Matthew Wade for 24.

The support act: Alex Doolan had a life early in his innings when Jason Behrendorff spilled a skied dolly in the outfield, but from there he found his feet, playing some delightful shots on his way to top-scoring for the Hurricanes with a measured 41 not out from 36 balls.

The consolation effort: Ashton Agar arrived in the middle in the fourth over and set about steadying the ship with a mature 32 from 37 balls, and while he might have been disappointed to exit before the final overs, he then chipped in with a couple of wickets and claimed figures of 2-19 to offer a reminder of his undoubted all-round talents.

The stat: D'Arcy Short made another 34 from the top of the order to move to the top of the run-scorers list in BBL|08 with 193. The left-arm wrist-spinner also chipped in with the wickets of top-scorers Hilton Cartwright (29) and Agar to claim 2-17 – the best figures of his T20 career.

The next stops: The Scorchers head up to Sydney to take on the Thunder on Wednesday (Jan 2) at Spotless Stadium, while the 'Canes have a week at home before hosting the Sixers on Friday night back in Hobart.
