Trailblazers trumped by Supernovas on final ball

Champagne Supernovas sky-high after thrilling finish as the best women's cricketers on the planet make history in Mumbai

The result: Trailblazers 6-129 (Bates 32, Rodrigues 25; Schutt 2-18) lost to Supernovas 7-130 (Wyatt 24, Raj 22; Bates 2-16) by three wickets.

The match in a tweet: History made in Mumbai as the world’s best cricketers go head to head in the first ever IPL Women’s T20 challenge!

The finish: The Supernovas looked to be cruising before a flurry of wickets left them needing four runs from six balls with three wickets in hand. Ellyse Perry couldn’t find the boundary but with one run needed from the final ball, Indian teenager Pooja Vastrakar held her nerve to seal the win.

The heroes: A brilliant bowling effort from the Supernovas, led by Perry and Megan Schutt, restricted the star-studded Trailblazers, keeping them to 6-129. Schutt took 2-18, nabbing the scalps of compatriots Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney – although the latter came via a contentious call, with replays appearing to show Schutt had overstepped. Perry chimed in with 2-20 and took a superb low catch.

The Aussies: Meg Lanning, Perry and Schutt walked away with bragging rights over Healy and Mooney after the Supernovas claimed a thrilling victory, with Lanning showing glimpses of brilliance in her 16 off 14, while Perry was poised in a tight finish, ending unbeaten on 13.

The support cast: While no Supernova batter built a significant innings in the chase, contributions from a who’s who of cricket’s top batters was enough to get them home. Mithali Raj (22 off 17) and Danni Wyatt (24 off 20) handed the Supernovas a fast start before Harmanpreet Kaur (21) and Sophie Devine (19) joined Lanning and Perry to see the blue team over the line.

The consolation effort: New Zealand skipper Suzie Bates led the way with bat and ball for the Trailblazers, scoring a match-high 32 before taking 2-16.

The history: The one-off exhibition game is the first step towards the introduction of a women’s IPL in the coming years, with 10 of the world’s best players joining India’s superstars for the momentous game. It’s the first time a women’s game has been played alongside a men’s Indian Premier League match and with women’s cricket building momentum in India, it could be the start of something big.
