'Gades hold nerve to seal key win

03 January 2019

A strong all-round performance from the Renegades kept them in touch with the WBBL top four in Geelong

Young gun Sophie Molineux has continued her fine Rebel WBBL form, lifting Melbourne Renegades to a five-wicket victory over Hobart Hurricanes in Geelong.

Player of the match Molineux snared 2-22 and smacked a quickfire 20 from six balls as the Renegades comfortably chased down a target of 116 at GMHBA Stadium.

The 20-year-old's fast start included three fours and a six, an effort backed up by captain Amy Satterthwaite's 28 and Courtney Webb's unbeaten 22.

Molineux's monster over

Corinne Hall (37 not out) fought a lone hand for the Hurricanes, who are languishing at the bottom of the ladder with just two wins for the season.

The Renegades' third-straight WBBL win lifted them to fifth place, one point behind the fourth-placed Perth Scorchers.

"We're sort of getting on a bit of a roll now at the right time of the year," said Molineux, who was part of Australia's victorious T20 World Cup squad.

"Hopefully we're not leaving it too late.

"I think every game's pretty crucial now for every team. The competition is so tight and Twenty20 cricket in itself is such a tight game ... hopefully we've got some good momentum now going into the last four or five games of the season."

The Renegades' finals bid will come without talented young quick Tayla Vlaeminck, who suffered a partial ACL strain while bowling at training on Monday.
