01 February 2018

Defending champs Perth thrashed by record margin as Hobart advance to maiden decider

The result: Hobart Hurricanes 4-210 (Wade 71, McDermott 67no; Bresnan 2-40) defeated Perth Scorchers 139 (Bresnan 43; Christian 4-17, Rogers 3-31) by 71 runs

The heroes: Matthew Wade has threatened to deliver at times through BBL|07 but the dashing leftie saved his best for this grand occasion. A lightning 71 from 45 set the tone and also set up the Hurricanes for a super finish, which was dominated by Ben McDermott (67no from 30). In the absence of D'Arcy Short, McDermott capably filled the role of power hitting, clubbing six sixes in an innings of extraordinary power. The two batsmen produced their highest scores of the tournament at the perfect time, while Dan Christian produced a remarkable all-round performance, making 37 from 22 and taking 4-17.

The support cast: In just his third game of the season, Tom Rogers was outstanding with the new ball, collecting 3-17 from three overs including the scalps of the Scorchers' top three.

The victim: Mitchell Marsh enjoyed a golden return to the Test team this summer but his Big Bash comeback didn't go so well; from his four overs, he conceded 53 runs (the third-most expensive figures in Scorchers history), before he contributed just three with the bat.

The stat: The Hurricanes' 4-210 was the third-highest in Big Bash history, and the highest-ever against the Scorchers, who also suffered their heaviest-ever runs defeat.

The silly point: Reckon this bloke was excited to catch this six? And what about the celebration!

The consolation effort: Tim Bresnan took the bowling honours with 2-40 then top scored with the bat from No.8, making 43 from 26 in a hopeless cause.

The Fantasy stars: Christian's double act earned him an outrageous 171 points, while Bresnan (109) and Wade (91) were the next best top performers.

The next stops: The Cane Train is on an express trip to the final! That will be on Sunday night at either Adelaide Oval or Etihad Stadium, depending on who prevails between the Strikers and the Renegades tomorrow night. Meanwhile, for just the second time, the Scorchers exit before the big dance.
