Strikers snare Short on long-term deal

Former Renegade to join champions Adelaide for next three Big Bash campaigns

Reigning KFC BBL champions Adelaide Strikers have bolstered their squad with the signing of promising Victorian allrounder Matt Short on a three-year deal.

Short featured in six matches for the Melbourne Renegades over the past four seasons, including three games in BBL|07 where he scored 106 runs at a strike rate of 121.84.

The 22-year-old’s most recent BBL outing featured a career-best knock of 62 at the top of the Renegades order against Brisbane Heat, before he was forced out of the XI for the thrilling semi-final against the Strikers when Cameron White returned to take his place.

Short's long stand ends in unbeaten ton

Short was yesterday announced among Victoria’s contract list for the four-day and 50-over formats, having made his Sheffield Shield debut last summer after several first-class appearances for the Cricket Australia XI against various touring nations since 2015, highlighted by an unbeaten 134 against England last November.

“Matt’s a talented young player, a right-hander who gives us another versatile batting option and he also bowls some handy off-spin,” SACA General Manager High Performance Tim said.

“We are pleased to sign him and look forward to him joining us next summer.”

Adelaide have managed to hold on to a large portion of their championship-winning squad, and now add Short as another attacking option through the middle order until the end of the BBL|10 season.

Power-hitter Colin Ingram and star leg-spinner Rashid Khan return as the Strikers’ two international signings, with a pair of spots remaining on the list for local talent.

Current Strikers squad: Wes Agar, Alex Carey, Michael Cormack, David Grant, Colin Ingram (OS), Rashid Khan (OS), Ben Laughlin, Jake Lehmann, Michael Neser, Liam O'Connor, Peter Siddle, Matt Short, Billy Stanlake, Jake Weatherald, Jon Wells, Nick Winter.
