Vics call up teen rookie for Shield clash

Jake Fraser-McGurk in the defending champs' 12-man squad for next week's match against Queensland at the MCG

Victoria could next week field the youngest Sheffield Shield debutant since Cameron White in 2001, with 17-year-old batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk named in the 12-man squad to take on Queensland at the MCG.

The Vics have been forced into making significant changes to their batting line-up with Marcus Harris, Will Pucovski and Nic Maddinson all unavailable due to Australia A selection, while Travis Dean and Andrew Fekete have been omitted.

Australia reps Aaron Finch (national duties) and James Pattinson (rested) return to the squad, along with Eamonn Vines and youngsters Fraser-McGurk and Will Sutherland, who could also debut.

Fraser-McGurk, an aggressive right-handed batsman, played against Pakistan last month in a T20 for the Cricket Australia XI, and has been signed by Melbourne Renegades after being a replacement player for the club in last summer's KFC Big Bash.

The teenager has also played for Australia Under-19s and made a last-start 130 for Victoria's Second XI side against Queensland.

Should he debut, Fraser-McGurk, at 17 years and 215 days, would be the youngest Shield player since White first turned out for the Vics at 17 years, 203 days in March 2001.

Western Australian allrounder Cameron Green and NSW pair Pat Cummins and Arjun Nair are the only 17-year-olds to debut in the intervening years.

Sutherland meanwhile, has played 11 times for the Vics in List A cricket but the 20-year-old fast-bowling allrounder is still awaiting a first-class debut.

Victoria will be aiming for its first win of the 2019-20 Marsh Sheffield Shield, having had a draw and two losses from the first three rounds.

The match will commence at 10.30am AEDT on Tuesday 12 November and be live streamed on cricket.com.au.
