Warner to return after elbow surgery

Suspended batsman reportedly set for Premier Cricket appearance in Sydney this weekend

David Warner is reportedly set to return from an elbow injury this weekend in Sydney's Premier Cricket competition with Randwick-Petersham.

Having flown home from the Bangladesh Premier League in January, Warner went under the knife to remove a bone spur and loose bone that had caused inflammation.

According to a Fairfax report, Warner has been declared fit to bat but isn't back to 100 per cent fitness, with concerns over hyperextension set to restrict his throwing in the field.

Randwick-Petersham are set to take on Penrith at Coogee Oval.

Warner turned out to considerable attention with the Premier Cricket side in September, making 155 in his first appearance of the summer and backing it up with 157 three innings later.

The 32-year-old appears set to make his way back to international cricket by first taking part in the Indian Premier League with his franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad, with his 12-month suspension set to expire on March 28.

As Warner readies himself for playing action on Saturday, his former teammate Steve Smith was today in Adelaide in a coaching capacity.

Smith joined his Premier Cricket club Sutherland at the inaugural National Premier Cricket T20 Championships as a mentor, sitting alongside Steve Waugh – whose son Austin also plays for Sutherland – as they cruised through to Wednesday's semi-finals.

Smith is behind Warner in his recovery from elbow surgery, though he has returned to batting in the nets.

Both batsmen are expected to be a part of Australia's World Cup campaign in the UK, beginning on June 1 against Afghanistan.

"They haven't been good players, they've been great players for Australia," national coach Justin Langer said of the pair in January.

"We are obviously monitoring them very closely and we are hopeful they will be getting themselves fit and strong and putting their name up for selection.

"It's an exciting time coming up."
