After seasons of narrow misses, premature finals bow-outs and slip-ups in the decider, the Sydney Sixers finally found themselves on the right side of the ledger for the first time since the BBL's inaugural season.
A revision to the finals system and the implementation of a 'top five' opened the door for more teams to take a shot at the stumps and a subsequent tilt at going all the way to the Final.
The Thunder were the beneficiary of that added spot, and almost made it all the way through to the main event after bundling both the Hurricanes and Strikers in the newly dubbed 'Eliminator' and 'Qualifier' finals respectively.
Their miraculous run was undone by the top-of-the-table Stars, who were desperate to make amends after last season's dramatic capitulation against the Melbourne Renegades which saw a first-up title slip through their fingers. Marcus Stoinis was a pivotal cog in the Stars' surge back to the top, who scored a record 705 runs for season; 147 of those coming in a then-record knock against the Sixers earlier in the campaign.
Unfortunately for the Stars, history repeated itself once again. A stumble at the final hurdle for the third time in nine seasons saw the Sixers reign supreme in the rain-affected Final; a second BBL title coming home at the SCG.
