After four seasons running in tandem with the BBL competition, WBBL|05 marked the first time the league would run in its own standalone slot between October and December.

The lengthened summer of cricket led to many memorable moments as the race to the top-four became increasingly tight, with records tumbling left and right as the competition gained more traction.

Phoebe Litchfield became the youngest player to score a half-century - putting on a record fourth-wicket partnership with Alex Blackwell, 20 years her senior, in the process - at just 16 years of age, Sophie Devine carted five consecutive sixes in a row to set a competition record, Beth Mooney surpassed the 400-run mark for the fifth season in a row, while Alyssa Healy and Ellyse Perry put on an unbeaten 199-run partnership to set a new women's domestic record.

The Sixers' promising start would come undone in one of the biggest backflips in the WBBL's first five years. After a shoulder injury to superstar Ellyse Perry, the flag favourites lost five consecutive games to slip out of the top-four and miss finals for the first time.

The Melbourne Renegades replaced the Sixers for the coveted final spot; a last-ball, match-winning six off the blade of Courtney Webb in their fixture against the Sixers the telling blow that determined both sides' fates.

Ultimately, it was the Brisbane Heat who claimed top honours over the Adelaide Strikers by season's end with a relatively comfortable six-wicket win with thanks to four consecutive sixes off the bat of Sammy-Jo Johnson; another masterful knock from Beth Mooney guiding her side to back-to-back championships.
