After falling short in the WBBL's inaugural tournament the following year, the Sydney Sixers were out for redemption come WBBL|02.

Having captured the public's interest and cementing its place in the Australian cricket summer, every game of the competition was split between Network 10 and livestreams on cricket.com.au, giving exposure to the women's game like never before.

With the added attention squarely on them, the Sixers asserted themselves as the season's powerhouse outfit with a pole position finish. One of their few defeats was to their rivals in the Sydney Thunder at the SCG, which was won by a boundary countback after both sides finished on the same score after a gripping Super Over. The game, one of 12 games broadcast on Network 10 that season, even delayed the national news broadcast as the exhilarating game reached its conclusion.

Complete with emerging talent Ash Gardner, South African superstar Marizanne Kapp and an impressive Ellyse Perry, the Sixers faced little resistance enroute to the Final, having conquered the Hurricanes in the semi-final by a then-record 103 runs.

The Final against the Perth Scorchers was far more nerve-wracking. Even with Perry sidelined through a hamstring injury from the week prior, the Sixers did just enough with bat and ball to scurry home by seven runs at the WACA Ground; Sarah Aley's match-winning 4-23 seeing her side home with the trophy after the season prior's heartbreak.
